Programmes at St Marys Avondale
Our school offers a wide range of programmes for children to become involved with. This page should give a taste as to what each one looks like within the school.
A range of online systems, tools and resources are available to support digital learning at St. Mary's. The children use on line learning activities like Maths Buddy and Study Ladder Programmes. A range of other online programmes are used to support the teaching and learning in different classes.
The school integrates device use and internet access via the school network into classroom teaching and learning programmes. Our aim is to enhance student learning by accessing information, engaging in activities, resource sharing and communication. Digital fluencies are supported across the school through the use of chrome books, desktops, laptops and i-Pads
Garden To Table
Garden to Table is part of the school programme from New Entrants to Year 8. Gardening offers hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in a wide array of curriculum areas including the natural and social sciences, math, language arts and nutrition. Students learn valuable life skills in the classroom, kitchen, and garden.
KiwiSport instructors come to the school every Thursday. Every term we focus on a new sport to teach skills, teamwork and communication. Every class participates in KiwiSport activities.
Netball is offered for girls in years 3-8. Training is held after school and games are played with neighbouring schools on Saturdays.
School and Community Masses
An important part of our schools special Catholic Character is the celebration of faith. When celebrating mass children meet to learn to sing and play new songs, practice Bible readings, offerings, and the prayers of the faithful.
Carols by Candlelight and Nativity Play
A yearly tradition by St. Mary's students filled with song and cheer as they gather together to celebrate the season of the birth of Jesus.
Christmas carols filled the air as the St. Mary's community and parish participate.
Education Outside The Classroom
Children extend their learning by visiting places related to the topic of study. Parents are also asked to assist with trips when applicable.
Swimming is a vital skill for all New Zealand children to learn. Each year swimming lessons are offered for all children.
Every year in term 4 the school holds a Cultural Concert.This is a unique way of Celebrating our Diversity” Parents, friends and family, You are warmly invited to come and celebrate some of the many cultures we have at our school. You will be entertained through song, dance The show displays children's dancing prowess and usually depicts the cultural dances from the chosen country.The music, dances, and costumes are all incredible to witness.
Every second year we hold a Science Expo evening where parents and whanau are invited in for our children to share their science learning.
Children participate in a range of community outreach opportunities, from visiting with the elderly to lending their voices to interfaith gatherings.
Year 7/8 Camp
Year 7/8 Camp is held every second year in term 1 for five days. This camp gives our Year 7 and 8 students a chance to come together and develop their leadership skills for the year ahead. It is also an important time of celebration, team building and discovery.
TTTechnologies (Year 7 and 8)
Every Friday morning the Intermediate Students travel to Avondale Intermediate to take part in Technology classes. The learning there links to their learning in the classroom.
St. Mary's School Avondale is very proud of its Year 8 leadership team. We want to encourage our students to be leaders and shining examples of our school values. Leadership workshops aim to help our leadership team do just that.
Visitors from different trade shares with the students about what they do and what it takes to be in their chosen profession. This provides an opportunity for students to have options in their career choices in the near future.
